The international role

of the Mediator

• Since 1992, the Mediator of the French Republic has expanded his activities to contribute to the development and running of national and international mediation institutions.
• He has fostered or facilitated the creation of similar institutions in countries in Africa, Eastern Europe and, in a general way, in all the developing countries seeking to reinforce the rule of law.
• Hence, the institution plays host to numerous personalities from overseas, trainees and senior public officials from different states, to better communicate the originality and running of the Institution beyond our borders.
• The Mediator encourages meetings for the purpose of exchange and cooperation; each international meeting is closed with a common declaration which reiterates the developments and commitments of the different institutions.
• Finally, the Mediator of the French Republic is involved in protecting human rights internationally. He is frequently approached by the Council of Europe and the United Nations, to assist these two intergovernmental organisations in their work advancing rights and freedoms in the world.
